week 8

The way we think of life and how we create with it has changed as a result of the DESMA 9 materials' exploration of the fusion of biology and design. Utilizing life, bio art is evolving into a creative medium in which scientists and artists work together to create expressive and functional systems using DNA, cells, and living organisms. In his TED Talk, "DNA Folding in Detail," Paul Rothemund showed how DNA can be folded at the atomic level to create intricate structures like boxes, smiley faces, and nanomachines. This technique, called DNA origami, treats DNA like code and folds it like paper, demonstrating the convergence of biology and computation. Making Stuff, the PBS NOVA documentary Smaller, introduced nanotechnology, such as spider-silk materials that are more durable than steel, micro-sensors for environmental change, and nanobots for medical repair. Like bio artists, scientists frequently imitate biological systems, take inspiration from nature's exquisite engineering, and create using the building blocks of life. The article "A University for the Coming Singularity" explores the idea of Singularity University, which postulates that technology is advancing at a rapid pace. A fictitious intersection of machine and human intelligence is known as the singularity. Because bio art sits at the nexus of biotech, ethics, and creativity, this idea is especially pertinent. Using living materials, artists such as Eduardo Kac, Oron Catts, and Heather Dewey-Hagborg are redefining what it means to be alive, human, or natural. Since the distinction between art and science is becoming more hazy, bio art is the present rather than the future.

  1. Hey Kaitlyn!! I really enjoyed reading your blog this week and thought you did a really good job on explaining all the main concepts of this week in such a simple and concise way! I also agree with you on how bio art is something that is in the present and has been conveyed in many different ways.
